New 52 Starfire Action Figure

Presenting Starfire Action Figure from the DC New 52 Red Hood and the Outlaws Series.

There are many sacred thing that DC has learned not to mess with over the years: Power Girl's Boob Window; Wonder Woman's pants; Star Sapphire's barely there uniform and of course, the sexually carefree usually naked form of Starfire. In the first issue of the New 52's Red Hood and the Outlaws, she asks Arsenal quite frankly "Do you want to have sex with me?" When Arsenal initially rejects the offer because he thinks she is Jason Todd's girl she replies "Absurd.  I am free to do what I want when I want..." Naturally Arsenal is more than happy to oblige. he asks her "So, is there anything I need to know about making love to a Tamarranean?" and she replies "Just that love has nothing to do with it."

21st Century writing at it's best ladies and gentlemen.

Not therefore surprising that her character has come under attack by feminists who think that she takes the Women's Lib movement waaaay past the dark ages and into the world of fantasy sex-starved princesses who drop their kits on a dime. A good read about Sexism in the New 52 Universe can be found here.

Anyway, the Starfire Red Hood and the Outlaws Action Figure's blister pack reads: "From Tamaranean Princess to Slave to Outlaw, the intergalactic Super-hero Starfire is all ablaze with this all-new action figure based on the designs from her action-packed monthly comic book, Red Hood and the Outlaws"

Sounds like a really bad rock-band, but the series had some really kick-ass art.

What's to like about the New 52 Red Hood and the Outlaws Starfire Action Figure?

FIRST: Let's face it: Starfire is half-naked and very beautiful! What's not to like about that?

The only other way it could have been made better is if DC used the costume that Starfire had towards the later portions of the Red Hood and the Outlaw series where she switched to a black leather outfit that still exposed most of her ample bosom.

And perhaps if they decided to give Starfire Power Girl's ample bosom.

SECOND: We love the texture of her skin especially in her upper torso. You can see flecks of glitter here and there embedded into the paint of her skin and uniform and we don't quite know how to describe it, but it seems like her head is made out of a different material from her body. It has an almost vinyl appearance that gives her face a very "soft" look.

You can see the difference in material between her body and face more clearly in these shots which also showcase her wonderful abs:

THIRD: We love the hair of the New 52 Starfire Action Figure. It flows seamlessly from Organic to Energy - to the uninitiated, Starfire constantly absorbs Ultraviolet radiation that she transforms into energy. Enough energy to allow her at one time to stand toe-to-toe with WonderWoman (Who, hopefully will not be murdered by Zack Znyder who, rumor has it, intends to make her Kryptonian).

What's NOT to like about the New 52 Red Hood and the Outlaws Starfire Action Figure?

FIRST: Starfire is from DC Direct, so you guessed it, almost no articulation whatsoever. In fact that glorious flaming hair of hers limits her head movement and helps dampen her poseability. What you see here is the extend of her articulation:

And it would really be nice if a figure this beautiful had a stand so that we can portray Starfigure in fight.

This particular figure was purchased from Planet X Comics in Glorietta for PhP 1,200 (Roughly US$ 27.27). It is available on Amaxon for a surprisingly low US$ 19.96 (Roughly PhP 878.24 plus shipping). Now that's depressing considering what we paid for her. Especially since, if we borrow a line from author Julian Darius: "This new Starfire thus combines (1) a woman who looks like an orange-skinned swimsuit model with (2) the memory of a goldfish and (3) a belief that sex should never be anything but utterly casual. She’s the ultimate male fantasy, the ultimate sex object."
