Star Wars Black Series Kylo Ren

Presenting Kylo Ren from the Star Wars Black Series 6" Action Figure series.

Hey it's that creepy nympho serial masturbator from "Girls!" (We really hate that show).

Since Star Wars Episode VII The Force Awakens hasn't happened yet, there isn't much we know about Kylo Ren.

He's not Sith in the traditional sense of the word, he's a Dark Side of the Force user and a member of the Knights of Ren - Ren is not his last name, it's titular. The Knights of Ren are allied with the First Order - the remnants of the former Empire.

Maybe if we talk dirty to him while he's wood-carving, he'll tell us more (If you watched Girls because you love your girlfriend, you'll get that reference). Oh! Apparently that controversial lightsaber is his design and personal creation.

The Star Wars Black Series Kylo Ren's blister card reveals that he's number 3 in the series and says "Kylo Ren: A dark warrior strong with the Force, Kylo Ren commands First Order missions with a temper as fiery as his unconventional lightsaber"

And it is an unconventional lightsaber. If you look at the trailer where Kylo Ren first activates his lightsaber, you'll notice that it emits a rather ragged. fiery blade versus the smooth blades used in previous movies by both Jedi and Sith.

Perhaps he's pushing too much power through his lenses or he's using a Phond crystal from KOTOR. We can picture an enraged Adam Driver lashing out with such a weapon. Fits his personality.

The blade can be removed, and it is depicted in a way that was not shown in the trailer: Black Series Kylo Ren's lightsaber's beam forms a cross guard at the hilt, it doesn't just emit from the sides like it did in the trailer.

What's to like about the Star Wars Black Series Kylo Ren?

FIRST: They made him tall and lanky just like Adam Driver. There was no attempt made to exaggerate him or make him more indimidating by bulking him up. He is as he is in the movies and we love that Disney kept this in.

SECOND: His clothing. Traditionally, "Matrix" style clothing when it comes to Star Wars or Marvel means that there will be a compromise in the figure's ability to move.

In the cases of the Star Wars Black Series Kylo Ren, it does not. Also, the rest of Kylo Ren's shoulder wrap/hoodie is made of hard plastic. It does not interfere with his articulations and helps hold the hood in place at the same time.

THIRD: The high level of articulation. Kylo Ren has a very "stalkerish" appeal thanks to his height.

Kylo Ren can dual wield his lightsaber:

And he can kneel as we've seen above:

Note how his lightsaber actually forms a small hammer. Given that he's been described as "fiery" we wouldn't put it past him to use it like one.

What's NOT to like about the Star Wars Black Series Kylo Ren?

FIRSTWe were going to go with "nothing" but we have to say that that lightsaber still does bother us. It's really impractical and a fine way to end up killing yourself - or losing various body parts.

The only - sorry - dumber idea we've seen to this are the lightsaber tonfas of Maris Brood and maybe the lightsaber whip of Lumiya.

When the Kylo Ren's lightsaber first emitted a "hilt" we surmised - given the ragged nature of the blade - that the "hilt" was nothing more than excess energy being expelled. But this incarnation where the "lit" portion of the blade forms part of the crossguard suggests that it is a part of the lightsaber "blade"

A simpler blade for a simple but very finely engineered figure should have been enough. We'd have screamed like girls when the first trailer came out whether or not Kylo Ren's blade had a crossguard or not. Light a lightsaber, we scream. We're simple like that JJ Abrams.

This particular Star Wars Black Series Kylo Ren was taken as a part of a barter agreement, but retails locally (good luck, he's somewhat of a chase figure here in the Philippines) for PhP 1,499.75 (Roughly US$ 32). He's already available on Amazon for a whopping US$ 49.99 (Roughly PhP 2,349.53 plus shipping).

Vader still rocks this look.

Here's hoping Kylo Ren is somehow tied into Darth Revan - though it was revealed that he was born circa the destruction of the 2nd Death Star. A descendant maybe?
