Toy of the Year 2011

THE AWARD
What is the Toy of the Year for 2011 in the Dungeon's? As we come to the close of 2011, and all the Christmas presents have been opened and played with, I have to ask that question. "Which toy gave me the most joy?"

There are so many toys and so little time, so for the sake of this blog entry let's limit the criteria to "Must have been purchased in 2011" - which automatically sets aside most of my personal favorites;  "Did well in terms of page-views" and take into consideration articulation, design, fun-factor and overall "awesome coolness".

Then I realized that merely naming the Toy of the year is sooo limiting and only comes in handy as a title and entry for search engines. Soooo. I'm going to expand it to the Top Twelve Toys - one toy per month - for this entry.

If you want your toys to be happy, keep fresh batteries.

While this isn't exactly "Tear-jerking" as it was originally advertised. It's still a nice video to watch.

Transformers Dark of the Moon: DA-28 Striker Optimus Prime

Presenting Takara's Transformers DA-28 Striker Optimus Prime. I've actually had the Transformers Dark of the Moon Striker Prime for close to a month now, but I didn't want to open him till Christmas, so finally here he is.

At first glance, DA-28 Striker Prime seems to just be a colored variant of the Transformers Dark of the Moon Leader Class Optimus Prime and Takara's DA-15 Jetwing Prime.  I'm actually not quite sure what to make of it because he has distinctive parts from both variants.

We first broke news about the DA-28 Striker Prime in October. What I failed to realize back then was that in the movie, Optimus Prime was holding his shield with his right hand, not his left. Also, like DA-15 Jetwing Prime, Striker Prime's shield is not movie accurate. Watch the movie and you'll see that Prime's shield is closer to Sentinel Prime's shield than to the shield that DA-28 uses. Also in the movie, Optimus Prime wields his trademark wrist swords against Shockwave's Driller. DA-28 does not have the wrist swords.

Merry Christmas from the R2-D2 Bar and the Darklord Dungeon!!!! :D

Merry Christmas to one and all from the R2-D2 Bar, Darklord Dungeon, and the Del Callar Family. Click on the image for a larger view.

I have to admit that I am not a real fan of Christmas. I'm one of those that are of the belief that if not everyone can be happy or celebrate Christmas, then that just adds to the over-all depression of the season - no wonder so many people kill themselves during this time (It doesn't help that for some strange reason all that they show on TV is the pending 2012 destruction of the world, and dead celebrities)

But Christmas is undoubtedly the time of Children - young and old. So whereever you are, whoever you are, may the peace of God, Allah, or Whoever particular Deity you chose to believe in, keep your family safe and happy this Christmas.

And Happy Birthday Jesus!

And who am I kidding! Click on "More" for my Christmas haul :D

STAR WARS: Rahm Kota (The Force Unleashed)

Presenting from the STAR WARS Force Unleashed video games and literature, Jedi Master Rahm Kota.

You may better remember Rahm Kota as the blind, half-drunk Jedi Master who fights by the side of Galen Marek, and much later, his clone Starkiller - which is ironic considering it was Galen who blinded him and sent him into a drinking binge. This incarnation of Rebel General Rahm Kota is seen in the STAR WARS Force Unleashed video game (The 1st one) as Galen Marek's first boss battle aboard the a crashing TIE Fighter Production facility above Nar Shadaa. After that he wanders around with bandages over his eyes; a tattered version of the Mandalorian Armor that he wears here; loses his topknot in favor of the wavy hair look; but can still fight effectively with his lightsaber - Hey if Luke can do it, so can he. The playable character if I remember correctly, is this version and not the blinded version.

Rahm Kota was actually trained by Master Yoda and survived Order 66 only because he didn't like to use clones during the Clone War, and actually organized his own militia.

Rahm Kota is also known as the "Samurai" Jedi having been built along the lines of  the roguish mentor image of QuiGon Jinn - though I think "Ronin" or "Masterless Samurai" is a more appropriate description for both QuiGon and Rahm as they did/do have their issues with the Jedi Leadership - strangely enough, Rahm was trained by Master Yoda. Qui-Gon was trained by Count Dooku who was also trained by Master Yoda. There seems to be a spring of rebellious spirit springing from that little guy.

Toy News: Captain America co-creator Joe Simon passes away.

Captain America's co-creator Joe Simon (Born Hymie Simon) passed away today, December 15, 2011 at a ripe old age of 98. Born October 1913, Joe Simon created Captain America prior to the start of World War II along with artist Jack Kirby who first drew the Star Spangled Avenger for what would become Marvel Comics - which he would later sue for copyright control of Captain America.

During the Marvel Civil War which resulted in the Death of Captain America, Joe Simon was quoted as saying "This is a time when we need Captain America more than ever."

Toy News: Unexpected Toy Score at SM Hypermart, Tiendesitas

I scored big tonight without having to crash into the Christmas meatgrinder in the major malls in Metro Manila.

I park in Tiendesitas - which is next to a major thoroughfare that leads to the major malls in Manila. It's close enough that I can crash into the Christmas rush but far enough that I don't have to really worry about the rush traffic.

And it has it's own mall - small, but still a mall - SM Hypermart (think of it as a community grocery for the rich) and within that mall is a small toy sale far removed from the major Toycon that's on-going just down the road.

It's there that I scored a Transformers Dark of the Moon Autobot Ark for PhP 700 (US$ 16 - US$ 24.89 on Amazon plus shipping); a DOTM Optimus Prime Weapons Platform for PhP 600 (US$ 14 - US$ 34.98 on Amazon plus shipping) and a DOTM Reverb for PhP 300 (US$ 7 - US$ 23.98 on Amazon plus shipping) for a total of PhP 1,600 (US$ 37 - US$ 83.85 on Amazon plus shipping). Not bad for a walk-by and I didn't have to squeeze through an angry mob to get them.

Superheroine Breast Cancer Public Service Announcements

Trawling my Google Plus account, I came across these wonderful Breast Cancer Public Service Announcements drawn by Maisa Chaves who works as an illustrator for DDB Mozambique (Of all places)

They each have a very simple message which is strikingly clear "Nobody's Immune to Breast Cancer: When we talk about Breast Cancer, there's no women or Superwomen. Everybody has to do the auto-examination monthly. Fight with us against the Enemy and, when in doubt, talk with your doctor." I particularly like the last statement: When in doubt, talk to your doctor.   self-diagnosis is all well and good, but we should never be afraid to consult an expert.

More of Maisa Chaves' PSA artworks after the jump featuring Catwoman, Wonderwoman and She-Hulk.

STAR WARS Knights of the Old Republic: Rohlan Dyre

Presenting the Mandalorian Rohlan Dyre from Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic. George Lucas has long been known for the genius of filling his movies, cartoons, books and comic books with a multitude of obscure characters and extras so that he can market with merchandising that people like me will pick off the market. There are people out there who create armies of rebel soldiers or Imperial Stormtroopers. Others collect obscure characters who appeared in the movies for just a fraction of a second to complete the Cantina various Star Wars Cantina or Jabba's Palace scenes.

I just collect.

Chances are most of these obscure characters are poorly made or remakes of previous figures. But every now and then you find a really, really cool obscure character and Rohlan Dyre is one such gem.

Acute Action Figure Addiction Disorder (AAFAD)

Presenting a semi-serious discussion on Acute Action Figure Addiction Disorder. I have to admit to laughing at this first because... well it is funny.

But the more I watched it, the more I realized just how real it was and that it wasn't funny at all because most of what they were saying, reacting, or doing, was what I was saying, reacting or doing.
  • Yes, I do debate whether I should open a package or leave it inside.
  • Yes, I do think that variants are NOT the same as the original even if it's just a paint difference and I would kill for variants.
  • Yes, I need a daily fix
  • Yes I trawl shops looking for "the good stuff"
  • Yes, I do believe my wife takes it a day at a time. God bless her.
  • Yes, I do get traumatized when someone so much as touches my toys - and I do know if they've been moved.
  • And, yes, I cannot take the destruction or loss of toys.
  • But no, I do not blame my parents for getting me started in toy collecting.

Transformers Dark of the Moon: DA-15 Jetwing Optimus Prime

Presenting, Takara's DA-15 Jetwing Optimus Prime from the Transformers Dark of the Moon Series.

Now unlike the Ultimate Optimus Prime (Which for some strange reason is sooo popular on this blog, despite the bashing that I gave it), DA-15 Jetwing Optimus Prime actually appeared in the 3rd Transformers movie - albeit it was a lame appearance and Prime ended up hanging upside down on suspension cables where he had to be rescued by the Wreckers - which makes the DA-15 Jetwing armor pretty lame I suppose (Wait for the DA-28 review) but you have to admit it still looks cool - waaay cooler than the Ultimate Optimus Prime in my opinion.

This particular DA-15 Jetwing Optimus Prime was purchased on a trip to Singapore for roughly PhP 6,600 (Roughly US 153) that was a thousand pesos cheaper (Roughly US$ 23 cheaper) than the price of the DA-15 Jetwing Optimus Prime here in Manila's blackmarket. Here in the Philippines, the Jetwing Optimus Prime sells for as much as PhP 7,800 on the blackmarket (US$ 181 plus shipping).  Jetwing Optimus Prime is available on Amazon for a whopping US$207.99 (Roughly PHP 8,943 plus shipping). So I got a steal.

Disclaimer: Unfortunately, I'm shooting with a new camera - Hey you people at Sony - and I cant' figure out why the photos turn grainy yet. So forgive me.

Star Wars: Jes Gistang the Female Stormtrooper

Presenting Jes Gistang, the only NAMED Female Stormtrooper in the entire Star Wars saga. There was actually another female Stormtrooper who appeared in issue #0 of Star Wars: Legacy but she was unnamed. Prior to Star Wars Legacy, there is no mention of women serving as Stormtroopers in the Empire. Agents, yes; pilots, yes; techs, yes; Hands of the Emperor, yes; but no Stormtroopers.

But then what do you expect from an organization built on the premise of the generic superiority of "humans" over "aliens?" Gender Equality definitely has to fly out of the door.

Anyway, better late than never. Jes Gistang was a member of Joker Squad: Company C, 9th Battalion of the 407th Stormtrooper Division under, first, the Fel Empire, then later under Darth Krayt's One Sith Empire.

I'm not really sure why they were called "Jokers" but they do get killed a lot. Sadly that includes Jes Gistang dying while assaulting the 908th Stormtrooper Division's fortress on Borosk. The 908th consisted of Stormtroopers who remained loyal to Emperor Fel, so naturally they had to be wiped out. Jes Gistang met her end in the heavy fighting when a stray blaster bolt hit one of her exposed Powek Paks and she blew up. Which is sad because Jes Gistang didn't want to be in the battle and tried to convince the rest of the Jokers to defect or leave the battlefield.

STAR WARS Knights of the Old Republic: Jarael

Presenting Jarael, the Force sensitive Arkanian Offshoot from the STAR WARS Knights of the Old Republic comic-book series who was released in a Star Wars Legacy Comic Book 2-pack along with the Mandalorian Rohlan Dyre.

Jarael is probably one of the more complex characters ever to become a part of the Star Wars Universe. Let's begin with her orgin: Jarael is an Arkanian Offshoot. Arkanians are master geneticists who bred sub-species of their race to handle the more menial tasks of society that require hard labor, such as mining. As such you have the pure-bred Arkanians, and you have the members of the "Offshoot Question" (A reference to the Jewish Question). Her original name was "Edessa": Arkanian for "triumph" because she was the first successful clone of a highly revered Arkanian Jedi Master Arca Jeth - who turned out not to be a pure blood resulting in Jarael's elfin features because of Master Arca Jeth's Sephi blood. Jarael was supposed to be the first in a a series of "Mandalorian Knights" - Force sensitive Mandalorian warriors to be used to exact revenge upon the Jedi Order who had defeated the Mandalorians in the Great Sith War.

6th Christmas Toy Fair (And 1st Philippine Die Cast & Custom Car Show)

The good news - for me - is that because I hate the Christmas rush, I've already ordered by Christmas haul on-line (Everything else I pick up now are stragglers for the tree). If you haven't picked up anything yet, then do drop by the 6th Christmas Toy Fair at the Magatrade Hall 1 (Hmmmm, smaller this year, I think. I remember when these things occupied all three halls), 5th level, Mega B, SM Megamall here in the Philippines from December 16-18, 2011

Transformers Prime: Cliffjumper

Presenting the ill-fated Cliffjumper from the new Transformers Prime animated series who's most famous quote is "Do I ever need back-up" and who can "layeth the smack-down" on any Decepticon dumb enough to cross his path.

"Alas poor Yorick!  I knew him." SPOILER ALERT. If you haven't seen the series yet, you might want to stop here and just look at the pretty pictures. Well come to think of it, if you read the Transformers Prime Arcee review where I didn't put a spoiler alert, then I suppose you already know that Cliffjumper died.

Unlike his Gen 1 "Whimpy little Autobot" character who is in there to teach people that little people can do great things, Transformers Prime Cliffjumper is a bad-ass! And best of all! Also unlike his Candy-ass G1 counterpart, Transformers Prime Cliffjumper is voiced by one of the ultimate bad-asses there is! The Great One! The People's Champion! The Brahma Bull! The Most E-lectrifying Man in Sports Entertainment! Dwayne "The Rock!" Johnson! Which is probably also why they had to kill him early on because the Rock is back and busy in the WWE having just Rock-bottomed the Miz, R-Truth and John Cena.

Transformers Prime: Arcee

Presenting Arcee from the Transformers Prime animated series. Arcee is a Cybertronian Scout - when is she never a scout? One of Optimus Prime's best actually.

Except this particular Arcee is suffering from a severe case of Survivor's Guilt. Before the Autobots in the Transformers Prime universe abandoned Cybetron in what would be later called the Great Exodus, Arcee was paired with an Autobot named Tailgate.

During a mission, Arcee was captured and tortured for information by the Decepticon Airachnid. When Arcee refused to reveal any information, Airachnid brought our Tailgate - who was apparently also captured. Tailgate was tortured will Arcee admitted that she did not have any valuable information. Satisfied, Airachnid killed Tailgate. Arcee was rescued before Airachnid could do her in as well.

After the Exodus, Arcee was again paired with another Autobot, Cliffjumper. He not only looks like Tailgate, he gets killed too - well later he gets re-animated as a psychotic Zombie, cut in half by Megatron and scattered in a mine. Anyway, this drives Arcee - understandably over the deep-end and Arcee ends up hating having to be paired with anyone. Ironically, she's assigned by Optimus Prime to protect the human Jack Darby. You can imagine her joy at having to protect someone from the Decepticons.

G.I. Joe Pursuit of Cobra: Storm Shadow Desert Battle

Presenting: the Desert Battle Storm Shadow from the G.I. Joe Pursuit of Cobra line. Ok I have to admit that it took some time for me to get this up here in the blog and I almost considered forgetting about it, but I had the time and he's really cool so why not?

In March of this year, we talked about the G.I. Joe Pursuit of Cobra Wave 3 Snake Eyes - which I believe is the counter-part of the Desert Battle Storm Shadow - and how cool he was because Hasbro gave the character so many different accouterments to choose from. Desert Battle Storm Shadow is no different and comes with a plethora of weapons that make him look really cool! Consider these images:

STAR WARS: Darth Nihl (Legacy series)

Presenting Darth Nihl of the One Sith Empire from the STAR WARS Legacy Series. Darth Nihl is a member of the Nagai race - a race of near-humans with pale white-skin and sharp features (often thought to be walking dead-humans) - also known as "Knives". They come from the planet Nagi from the Firefist Universe - one of the closest universes to the main STAR WARS universe that is still currently classified as "Unexplored" though the Nagai have actually tried several invasions and member of the Nagai have long traveled the STAR WARS universe, some of whom actually became Jedi.

Darth Nihl chose a different path obviously.

Darth Nihl was recruited by Darth Krayt for his One Sith Empire, initially serving as a "Fist"or warlord. Eventually however - given the more... "expansive" yet heretical view of how the Sith should be organized by Darth Krayt, Darth Nihl was eventually promoted to the rank of "Hand" (A position he would have to begrudgingly share with Darth Talon.) Upon becoming Darth Krayt's hand, Darth Nihl would lead an attack on the Jedi Praxeum on the planet of Ossus where he would find himself in battle against, among others, Jedi Master Wolf Sazen who would severely wound him (At the cost of an arm). Before his battle with the Wolf though, Darth Nihl was able to kill Kol Skywalker, ancestor of Luke Skywalker and father of Cade Skywalker - who was presumed dead after the destruction of the temple and who would later resurface as a bounty hunter.

G.I. Joe 2011 SDCC Exclusive: Zarana Sister to Zartan

Presenting the SDCC 2011 Exclusive Zarana: the younger sister of Zartan and older sister to Zandar.

There's a lot more to Zarana than meets the eye. A lot of people only see her as the female version of Zartan  or as the Dreadnok's token greedy, ambitious short-tempered bad-ass female - which is definitely easy to understand given that she is notoriously short-tempered - which unfortunately at one time led to her being sent to the Cobra dungeon.

But if you've read the Marvel comic book series, you'll actually see that naturally auburn hair colored Zarana is more than a mistress of disguise, she actually at one time rose to the become the second in command of Cobra Commander and more than once has she displayed a keen tactical intellect fully utilizing her natural ability to read and mimic other people's personalities - at one time, to turn on fellow Dreadnok Thrasher's berserker rage, she punches his broken arm.

Exosquad LD-029 Field Sergeant E-Frame - G.I. Joe Custom

Presenting an Exosquad LD-029 Field Sergeant E-Frame Power Armor stripped and modified for  G.I. Joe action figure use.

Exosquad is a cartoon of American origin that ran for two seasons between 1993 and 1994. Unfortunately I've never seen the series and I don't believe it was ever released here in the Philippines.

But according to their wiki, Exosquad follows the exploits of Able Squad: An E-Frame (Exoskeleton Frames or Exo-Frames) enhanced military arm of the Earth Congress that becomes Earth's spearhead against the invading Neosapien Commonwealth.

The Neosapien Commonwealth is a race of what can best bed described as genetically crafted Humanoids made by humans to assist in the colonization and terraforming of Venus and Mars. Which is interesting because until 1991, no one knew if there was any "Terra" on Venus to "Form". Anyway, the Neosapiens get pissed at the abuse of the humans and revolt. Their first revolt is crushed and things are made better for them, but they rise again this time with a vengeance and a severe Adolf Hitler complex (Think Battlestar Galactica).

EPILIPSY FUNDRAISER ALLOWS FANS OPPORTUNITY TO HAVE DINNER WITH STAR WARS AND STAR TREK STARS

Earlier this year John McLaren and RickMan completed a comic book for the Epilepsy Foundation. Targetroids Optiaim & Megashoton (Transformers)

Presenting the Targetroids Optiaim and Megashoton, 3rd party mini-versions of the Transformers' Optimus Prime and Megatron.

Optiaim and Megashoton - TFC-EX-004 are from  TFCtoys, the same people who brought you Battle Rollar TFC-EX 002 and the Gears of War Packs. They are also the people behind the new Constructicons.

In what was probably an attempt to avoid even more copyright issues than they already have violated, TFCtoys called them Targetroids - which are not to be confused with Targetmasters - Targetmasters are pair-bonded Transformers (one usually larger than the other) where one of the pair transforms into a weapon. This is not to be confused with Transformers who just transform into a weapon like Megatron does.

To further confuse Copyright lawyers, TFC- EX-004's Optiaim - whose appearance and likeness to Optimus Prime is purely coincidence - transforms into a cannon, not a truck,  which can be hand held or mounted. Megashoton - whose appearance and likeness to a certain Megatron is also purely coincidental - transforms into an elongated sniper rifle, not a luger or pistol, that can also be hand-held or mounted.

These two Targetroids come together as a set and there is another set out in the market that involves Rodimus Prime (Called Hot Flame) and Starscream (Called Screamer).

Mint Museum Singapore: Found the Sign

Last month, we wrote about a very gleeful sign that laid the challenge "Whoever has the most toys when he dies wins"

But I did not know where the original photo of the sign was taken nor by whom.

This week found me in Singapore visiting the Mint (Moment of Imagination and Nostalgia with Toys) Museum - a world class collection of toys that span more than 25 countries covering over 100 years.

My wife and I stepped into the elevator and "Whoa! This looks familiar!"

The sign is not from an exhibit, it's in the Mint Museum elevator. Do check it out if you ever end up in Singapore, it's a wonderful museum that we'll be writing about in a bit.

The Mint Museum's address is 26 Seah Street, Singapore. Their website is HERE.

Where's Wall-E?

Where's Wall-E? I'm not really sure who came up with this particular little piece of ingenious art-work, but it is really, really cool.

Not only do you get to search for one of Bill Gates' legacies, but you also get to reminisce, remember those younger years and basically hit yourself on the head as you struggle to remember some of the names of these classic cartoon robots from the.... 70s to the present.

I'd open the image in another tab if I were you and you really wanted to find Wall-E.

Clue: He's not that far from EVA.

STAR WARS: Rogue Squadron

Presenting Rogue Squadron, the Star Wars Universe's most famous (infamous) fighter squadron and one of the collections that I've struggled to complete. Unfortunately I still do not have the new Battle of Endor 1 & 2 Pilot Packs.

This particular collection covers the Rogue pilots from Star Wars Episodes IV, V, VI; everything prior to Episode IV,  everything in between those three; everything after VI, the novels and most of the expanded universe.

As you can see from the photo, Rogue Squadron has had some pretty surprising members over the years. This particular collection includes 5 Jedi, 1 future Sith, a Princess, the leader of the Imperial 181st Squadron, and a Princess - though the full roster of Rogue Squadron members is actually much more interesting. If you want the full roster and history of Rogue Squadron, visit the Rogue Squadron wiki HERE.

Halo 3: Interchangeable Armor Pack - Hayabusa, Rogue, Scout & CQB

Presenting Halo 3's Interchangeable Armor Pack which allows you to customize your Spartan with Rogue, Scout, CQB (Close Quarters Battle), and the infamous Hayabusa Spartan variant armor. I chose to write about the Mjolnir Mark VI Power Armor today, November 4 - which is my birthday by the way - because today is the official anniversary of the Dark Lord Dungeon.

One year ago today ( I started writing this on November 4), I made a commitment to sharing with the world my collection, my toys and my experiences with the rest of the world. A year ago I opened with the G.I. Joe Rolling Operations Command Center (ROCC)  and moved on to talk about the, then, spanking new HALO Warthog and the HALO UNSC Special Warfare Command Group Three. Believe it or not, but the highest viewed item on this blog over the past year is Halo's Noble Team so it was only fitting that I start a new year with Halo.

It was my wife who prodded me to start writing about my toys and In the process of this blog I've had my first exhibit, and met some incredible people whom I can call friends both on-line and in real life AND started two other blogs: Denis del Callar: Fan Art (NSFW) and Fairladytower (Which I really should update). What used to be a very selfish hobby has become a crusade to share with the rest of the world  just how much joy toy collecting can be. It's also given me back the opportunity to go back and practice what I used to do so easily and so well when I was younger - write.

And for that I thank her.

R2-KT IS NOT TO BE CONFUSED WITH THE SANRIO R2-D2

Addendum to my post on R2-KT thanks to my friend Rhoel. R2-KT is NOT to be confused with the Sanrio Pink R2-D2 - the OTHER Pink R2 unit.

Sanrio R2-D2 photo courtesy of: hawaiikawaii.net

Star Wars R2-KT: The Pink Imperial Droid with the Heart of Gold

Presenting R2-KT the Star Wars Universe's first and, so far, only Pink Imperial Droid with the Heart of Gold.  I purchase R2-KT around 2006 or 2007 not because I wanted a pink R2 unit, but because R2-KT was born as a result of a crippling disease that claims the lives of thousands every day. I've never felt the need to open this particular figure and probably never will because she was purchased not out of want, but as a very small way of giving to a cause worth fighting for.
