Silk Spectre II (Modern)

Presenting DC Direct's Silk Spectre II (Modern).

This is what happens when you have long weekends, you start to break out the DVDs and watch classic superhero films.

The 2009 Watchmen movie may have gained mixed reviews in the box office, it did indeed spark a cult following. I suppose I belong to that following on the simple basis that I'm a die-hard fan of Malin Ackerman's portrayal of Laurie Juspeczyk AKA Silk Spectre II or Silk Spectre Modern.

I'm a fan not only because she's "Used to going out at 3AM and doing something stupid", and how dangerous a hand-to-hand combatant she is, but because she's probably the only super-heroine I know that has nipples on her costume - either that or her nipples are hard enough to push through thick latex.

I no longer have her packaging, but Amazon has this to say about the product: "A complex, multi-layered mystery adventure, WATCHMEN is set in an 1985 America in which costumed superheroes are part of the fabric of everyday society, and the ""Doomsday Clock"" - which charts the USA's tension with the Soviet Union - is permanently set at five minutes to midnight.

When one of his former colleagues is murdered, the washed up but no less determined masked vigilante Rorschach sets out to uncover a plot to kill and discredit all past and present superheroes. As he reconnects with his former crime-fighting legion - a ragtag group of retired superheroes, only one of whom has true powers - Rorschach glimpses a wide-ranging and disturbing conspiracy with links to their shared past and catastrophic consequences for the future.

Their mission is to watch over humanity... but who is watching the WATCHMEN? DC Direct presents this series of action figures based on the Warner Bros. film based upon Alan Moore's acclaimed graphic novel. Collect them all, each sold separately."

What's to like about the DC Direct Watchmen Silk Spectre II (Modern)?

It's a pretty good looking sculpt which I can daresay is movie accurate down to a rather deadpan/dour looking Malin Ackerman face.

I love the detailing - and I'm not just referring to her nipples. Look at how there are actually two zippers on her chest: one for the suit, the other for the corset that lifts her figure. It honestly looks like you can flip the tab up and pull the zippers down and have as much fun as Night Owl did.

Then proceed down to the steel toed heels of her thigh-length boots.

She comes with a nice city-scape stand reminiscent of... a elevated train station (?) and is quite easy to stand-up/pose despite the really high-heels.

What's NOT to like about the DC Direct Watchmen Silk Spectre II (Modern)?

Well it's DC Direct. You've probably noticed by now that she hardly moved, and that's because she cannot. What you've seen here is the probably extent of her movement.

Sad given how physical and flexible she is in the Watchmen movie. No you will be unable to recreate your favorite movie scenes with this Silk Spectre Action Figure, all she can do is stand and look dour.

The DC Direct Silk Spectre II (Modern) was purchased a long time ago when the movie came out. She's available now on Amazon for US$ 12.99 (Roughly PhP 571 plus shipping). I'm pretty sure I paid more for her than that. Is she worth it? Malin Ackerman;s nipples are definitely worth it.
