Marvel Legends Gamora - Guardians of the Galaxy

Presenting Gamora from the Marvel Legends Guardians of the Galaxy collection.

If you haven't seen it yet, Guardians of the Galaxy is officially the Dungeon's "Best Movie of the Year!" (For now. After all we've yet to see Expendables 3).

Spoilers now: In the movie, Gamora is the adopted daughter of Thanos forced to become an intergalactic assassin who is currently taking orders from Ronan the Accuser. She is played by the incredibly beautiful Zoe Saldana - who we suppose really has a thing for science fiction having starred in Star Trek and Avatar.

We should probably note that Zoe Saldana doesn't look anything like the original Marvel 616 Gamora who dressed in snake-skin and could give the She-Hulk a run for her money as "Hottest Green Amazon." She also wore waaaaay less clothing than Zoe Saldana (Though later on her writers actually gave her real clothes).

Oh yeah! Gamora in the comic books is known for making Tony Stark cry "Uncle" in the sack!

The Marvel Legends Guardians of the Galaxy Gamora's blister pack says.... "Absolutely nothing!!!"

She doesn't even resemble the chubby green girl depicted at the back of the packaging.

The Marvel Legends Gamora comes with the sword she used in the movie - though that was a telescoping one that hooked to her left hip. And the left leg of the BAF Groot figure.

It was a bit of a letdown that Marvel did not provide her with a folded sword option that could attach to the hip.

You can however slip the blade into her right side which can double as sheath:

Now we wonder: Thanos is an intergalactic ruler and Gamora is his adopted daughter, Marvel is owned by Disney, so is Gamora a Disney Princess?

What's NOT to like about the Marvel Legends Guardians of the Galaxy Gamora?

Yes, we're beginning this review with "What's NOT to like" because.... well.... there's not much to like - if at all.

First off and the most obvious problem with this action figure is that it looks nothing like Zoe Saldana. The first time we encountered the Gamora figure was when the Guardians of the Galaxy were being sold as a set in Toy Kingdom here in the Philippines. We took a look at it and saw a really horrendous figure looking back at us.

When the movie was released - and probably prompted by low sales, they started selling singles. We walked into three different toy stores and looked at three different Marvel Legends Gamoras before settling on this one which - in our opinion - had the most likeable face.

Gamora has none of the sharp features of Zoe Saldana. If anything - and perhaps because we were marathoning Arrow while we were shooting her - she looks more like a green Summer Glau - thanks to the rounder features.

Also note all that excess flash along her jawline. The Second and perhaps most worrisome problem of the Guardians of the Galaxy Gamora is how lifeless her face seems. It's a trend that Dungeon visitors like Joint Junkie noticed with all the new movie Marvel Legends beginning with the Captain America: The Winter Soldier figures: All of them have blank expressionless faces.

Third:  Her head is too big and the thickness of her hair limits her head movement. The size of her head isn't really that apparent though till you look at her from behind:

Fourth: She has poor leg articulation. It looks great from the box, but the picture above where Gamora's showing her gracious behind? That's how far her legs open. The result is that you have to cheat some of Gamora's "split" poses:

Fifth: Her grip is terrible! The Marvel Legends Gamora can barely hold onto her sword. That combined with the spindly body with a heavy head made her a nightmare to pose. Yes Gamora can dual wield her sword, but in general? It kept falling out of her hands.

What's to like about the Marvel Legends Guardians of the Galaxy Gamora?

Welll Gamora can kneel and she looks great when she does. We also love the electric blue highlights added to her leather outfit.

But that's about it. This particular Marvel Legends Guardians of the Galaxy Gamora was purchased from Toys R'Us in Glorietta for PhP 1,149.75 (A whopping US$ 26). Gamora is available on Amaxon for US$ 19.62 (Roughly PhP 863.28 plus shipping). Is she worth it? Well the movie is really great. First movie to make us happy in a long while. We believe it was described as "A beautiful mess" So for the sake of that beautiful mess, yes.
