Yeah I look good |
So basically this is G-Studio's take on IDW comic's Optimus Prime. It's not the first take on this particular Optimus Prime that we've seen or is in our collection. If we're right it's the fourth right after the 30th Anniversary Transformers Generations Optimus Prime, Toyworld's Orion, and the SND-01 Primo Vitalis upgrade for the Combiner Wars Optimus Prime.
MORE AFTER THE JUMP
The blister pack of the G-Studio Ultra Maxmas does not say much about this 3rd party Transformer, but the set does come with little card that says that Ultra Maxmas is the New High Commander of the Electbots who deforms into a Heavy Truck. The really hard to read card describes a great war and how Ultra Maxmas had no choice but to take leadership. But does so with such horrendous grammar that we will not be repeating it here.
Ultra Maxmas comes armed with a pair of ion-cannons and a pair of replaceable ears - yes ears.
Woof! Woof! |
WHAT'S NOT TO LIKE ABOUT THE TG-STUDIO ULTRA MAXMAS OPTIMUS PRIME?
FIRST: If Optimus Prime were a Greyhound, this is what he would look like. Lean, thin, with really long ears.
It's definitely a look that we're not accustomed to and not a look we feel will be popular.
In fact it makes him look like a red Gundam.
Happily Ultra Maxas comes with an alternate set of ears - probably because G-Studio figured out that some people will not be happy. But they're still weirdly long.
SECOND: While the G-Studio Ultra Maxmas comes with a really high degree of articulation, half the time it feels like his joints - particularly his shoulder joints - are about to snap off.

THIRD: Both ion-cannons by the way slide into locks on Ultra Maxmas' hands. Both ion-cannon grips feel like they're made of brittle plastic that won't last long. He looks better without his weapons anyway:
I have small hands |
Iron Man sucks! |
FIFTH: The non-traditional means of opening his chest. When you think about it, the traditional chest opening of Optimus Prime should actually prevent him from reaching the Matrix inside so this upward opening makes sense. It's innovative and new, but again, an acquired taste.

WHAT'S TO LIKE ABOUT THE TG-STUDIO ULTRA MAXMAS OPTIMUS PRIME?
FIRST: The detailing is actually incredible! We're in love with the mask, and the body. There are some discrepancies between the Ultra Maxmas and the IDW version of Optimus Prime, but it's still pretty good. Honestly despite the handles on his arm-guards being liabilities, they are inspired add-ons that we have not seen before in any Transformer.
Now if only he weren't so lean.
SECOND: Ultra Maxmas was touted as one of the hardest Transformers to transform. He actually isn't that hard to transform and his truck-mode is solid.
The Transformers G-Studio Ultra Maxmas - Optimus Prime - is available on Amazon for US$ 170 (Roughly PhP 8,500 plus shipping).
An acquired taste.
