So the question now is... do I open it?
To the uninitiated, waaay back in 1979, Boba Fett was released as an EXCLUSIVE special mail-order toy. Simply buy Star Wars figurines, cut and collect the tiny badges on the blister card, mail it to Kenner and you get this through the mail a few weeks later.
However at the time, some kid playing with a Battlestar Galactica figure got seriously injured by a spring-fired rocket (Probably either choked on it or got an eye poked - face it, we've all done that) and Kenner was forced to either idiot proof the toy ( Not going to happen) or remove the spring-loaded weapon. They opted to glue the Rocket to his back-pack.
Now for the myth...
The myth is - and this is gonna be hard to prove - is that Kenner was not able to recall all the Boba Fetts and that somewhere out there are a few figures with Rocket-Firing Backpacks. Kenner denies that any were ever released with Rocket-Firing backpacks - but then what company would admit to that?
My take on the existence of a 1979 Boba Fett Action Figure with a Rocket Firing Backpack? Plausible. But unlikely and difficult to prove.
So 33 years later, Hasbro (Note by the way, the Kenner logo on the front of the blister card) releases the figure without a care as to whether or not someone will get hurt trusting that 33 years later, we are all smart enough not to poke our eyes out.
So do I open it or not? Please do vote on the Dark Lord Dungeon Facebook page and don't forget to like it if you haven't already.
Boba Fett's blister card reads: "He's here at last! After 30 years, the Boba Fett Figure with the rocket-firing backpack has reached this galaxy! The story of this mail away figure is well known among STAR WARS fans, and we're here to deliver the goods. This figure is a re-creation of the original Boba Fett figure, with the addition of that all-important rocket-firing feature. Good things come to those who wait - and the wait is officially over! Enjoy!"
The STAR WARS Vintage Series Boba Fett Rocket-Firing Backpack action figure is available on Amazon for US$ 34.88 (Roughly PhP 1,500 plus shipping). This particular figure was purchased at retail at Toy Kingdom in Megamall for PhP 499.75 (Roughly US$ 11.60)

Funny how back then they glued the missile thinking it'd be bad for kids but now firing missiles are everywhere on toys. Have the toy company priorities changed? :P
ReplyDeleteFor the record, I'd say don't open. You could find out whether or not yours fires but then what? While I'm usually the "open the toy" type, I tend not to be with vintage toys. I say leave it.
