Star Wars Black Series Captain Rex

Presenting Captain Rex from the Star Wars Black Series Toyline.

Captain Rex is Republic Clone CT-7567, commander of the famous - and later infamous - 501st Legion during the Clone Wars. Captain Rex did not finish the Clone Wars in service though of the 501st, so it was another Clone Commander, Appo, who led the 501st - what would become to be known as "Vader's Fist" - in the assault on the Jedi Temple in Coruscant.

Captain Rex's history is almost as colorful as the history of Marshal Commander Cody - who was his close friend. Captain Rex served under Jedi General Anakin Skywalker, while Marshal Commander Cody and his 7th Sky Corps 212th Attack Battalion, serve under General Kenobi.


The Star Wars Black Series Captain Rex's blister card reads: "Captain Rex is a tough, free-thinking clone trooper who leads the 501st Legion under the command of Jedi General Anakin Skywalker during the Clone Wars"

Personally we're not sure why Captain Rex lost command of the 501st. We do know however that an aged version of Captain Rex makes a return in Star Wars: Rebels.

What's to like about the Star Wars Black Series Captain Rex?

FIRST: The detailing. Captain Rex despised the Phase II Clone Trooper Armor. He believed that they were pre-fabricated and therefore disposable - supposedly like the trooper inside the armor. So when he was required to switch to Phase II armor, he took his armor and modified it - adding the best elements of his Phase I armor onto the Phase II armor. Hence you can see weld marks on the armor.

Captain Rex kept his Jaig eyes - a Mandalorian badge of honor that Clone Warriors could add to their armor as instructed by their commanders for acts of valor - his range finder, his kama, holsters, and most of his Phase I helmet features.

Captain Rex also started placing "kill" marks all over his armor.

By our count: 161 kills. Note the weld marks on his helmet.If you do a recount, the marks on the "cheeks" of his helmet are part of the helmet's rebreather system, don't count them.

SECOND: Upper body articulation is excellent.

What's NOT to like about the Star Wars Black Series Captain Rex?

FIRST: The poor leg articulation. Personally he feels like a recycled Animated Series action figure. Captain Rex has difficulty moving thanks to his kama, and his leg articulation is made even worse thanks to the fact that his hip joints are simple swivel joints - so you can move them front and back - barely - but can't move them from side to side - which is a shame.

SECOND: We would also have appreciated some better detailing with regard to his range-finder. It's amateurishly cut and you can see the flash attaching it to the upper part of his helmet. We would have appreciated it more if you could move it.

Given that Captain Rex feels like an Animated Series action figure - which we abhor - we don't recommend this figure. Maybe as something that you can use to salvage and create a better Captain Rex.
