KO Star Wars Episode VII Lego Millennium Falcon

Presenting a knock-off - KO - Star Wars Episode VII Lego Millennium Falcon.

To the uninitiated (Really? Why are you here?) this is the infamous modified YT-1300 that, in the hands of Han Solo, did the Kessel run in fourteen (TWELVE!!!) Parsecs.

We feel that this should not to be confused with the Millennium Falcon from Episodes III, IV, V and VI because this has a rectangular radar instead of a dish. If you watched Return of the Jedi, then you know that the radar dish was torn off in the Death Star run - blame Lando Calrissian and Nien Nunb for that. We suppose it made sense to JJ Abrams to replace it with an upgrade and give it a lower profile so that it would not happen again.

But in reality, it's probably a marketing stunt so that collectors and kids will say "I have to have one" despite having a massive Legacy Edition Millennium Falcon at home - because it's just not the same thing.

MORE AFTER THE JUMP

As mentioned, this is a knock-off. This unnamed ship is from the Chinese pirate Lepin's Star Wnrs KO Lego series.

The ship is not named, but that is Kylo Ren's image on the box - which Lepin also copied - and Han Solo, Rey, Finn, Chewbacca, Tasu Leech, BB-8, and a Kanji Club gang member. Lepin also removed the Disney logo.

Lepin claims that there were 1, 381 pieces inside - not that we counted. Lego claims that there are only 1,329 pieces. It took close to 6 hours to assemble.

What's to like about the Lepin Star Wnrs KO Star Wars Episode VII Lego Millennium Falcon?

FIRST: The price! The KO Star Wars Episode VII Lego Millennium Falcon set us back PhP 1,500 (Roughly US$ 31.25). The REAL Lego version on Amazon costs US$ 148.99 (Roughly PhP 7,151,52 plus shipping) - unless you're in the Philippines where it will set you back around PhP 10,000 (Roughly US$ 208.33). So we got it for a steal! After it's design was stolen and produced by Lepin.

Admittedly we just used to stare at photos of it on the internet with envy. Now we have one.

SECOND:  It's a playset! This is both a great thing and a downer depending upon how you look at it. We spoke a few months back about how the Legacy Edition Millennium Falcon was a playset because it was so heavy that you can't pick it up and go zoom, zoom, zoom around the room (Well you can, but it's not the best of workouts). In the case of the Lepin Star Wnrs Episode VII Millennium Falcon, it doesn't really have a "spine" or a structure rigid enough to support regular play which something like the Ghost (Which can be thrown at people and do some damage) and the Tumbler have. It feels a lot like the command saucer of the Kre-O USS Enterprise which is built also mostly out of plates rather than ridges, and plates easily pop out when pressure is exerted on them.

Truthfully, the only place where you can safely lift and carry the KO Star Wars Episode VII Millennium Falcon is the more or less rigid spine formed between the starboard and port docking collars and the gun-turrets. Anywhere else and you can feel the plates starting to buckle. So the Falcon is really meant to just be on a table and not really fly. It's also mostly because of all the gimmicks that Disney designed into it which we will go into in a bit. This is also probably why the landing gear does not retract.

The Star Wnrs Millennium falcon stands a little over 5" high, is around 18" long and 12" wide.

THREE: Onto the gimmicks:

You can detach the cockpit and load two figures - including the larger Chewbacca figure. You can also raise/open the upper turret (Which rotates and elevates) and load two "gunner" figures into the Falcon's turret bay.

The exterior of the LEGO Millennium Falcon's hull is very detailed. Just as detailed as the hull of the Legacy Edition Millennium Falcon. It's very rough, patchworked and uneven. Very Millennium Falcon. The radar also elevates and rotates.

And then the clam-shell opens up revealing all the goodies!

You can see the holding "Spine" running across the ship.

Starting from the back, we have the Millennium Falcon's engine bay - something even the highly detailed Legacy Edition Millennium Falcon does not have. You can see how messy it is. You have the hyperdrive and the sublight engines. There are cables, bars, storageboxes, benches, wrenches and a ton of things you can trip over. Really a mess.

On the starboard side is the loading ramp. On the port side is a smuggler's compartment that can fit two LEGO figures:

Up front you have the Falcon's communication's bay and a recreation area inclusive of the infamous holochess table. Still uber messy and there are still a lot of things to trip over.

What's NOT to like about the Lepin Star Wnrs KO Star Wars Episode VII Lego Millennium Falcon?

FIRST: A problem we experienced with the Lepin KO Episode VII Resistance X-Wing: Lepin hasn't been able to properly replicate the spring loaded missile launchers of Lego. Half the time they won't load, half the time they won't launch, so you're better off just discarding them. The Lepin Star Wnrs KO Star Wars Episode VII LEGO Millennium Falcon has two spring loaded launchers nicely hidden/recessed - which is actually something we love about this design, the launchers, and their red missiles can't be seen - within each of the front forks of the Falcon., Reaching into the holes in the front forks triggers the missiles. We discarded the missiles though.

SECOND: Same problem again with Poe Dameron's X-Wing Lepin KO: The Lepin figures seem.... off... due to their hair.  At one point we decided to swap Rey's hair with that of Tasu Leech because it just looked really weird. One of these days we'll probably swap these out with the originals or other KOs. Only BB-8 is fine. Note Chewbacca's bowcaster. No it doesn't work.

Still, for the price? We're not complaining. We're very happy :D
