Corran Horn and Whistler |
Welcome to a review of the Rogue Squadron pilot who would become a Jedi Master, Corran Horn and his R2 Whistler action figures from the Star Wars Expanded Universe.
One of the saddest things about Star Wars Episode VII is that is disregards almost 20 years of incredible story-lines and characters. Seriously people who scoff at these books because "All that matters are the movies" should learn to read.
While some (one) characters, like Grand Admiral Thrawn, have been revived from the discard pile, they're so far mere shadows of what they can be.
Meanwhile Corran Horn remains on the discard pile. Corran was a "police detective" of the Corellian Security Force. He ran afoul with an Imperial Intelligence Officer and went into hiding - later to join the rebellion. Following the Battle of Endor, Wedge Antilles was mandated with re-building Rogue Squadron and Corran signed up and became Rogue 9. Personal ambition made him strive to be the best pilot in the legendary squadron but his ass was kicked by pilots Tycho Celchu and Wedge Antilles.
MORE AFTER THE JUMP
Unbeknownst to Lieutenant Horn, his piloting edge was because he was Force sensitive and came from a long line of Jedi who were known for being unable to use Telekinesis, but were gifted in illusion casting and energy absorption. In the book "I, Jedi" Corran was able to absorb an explosion and channel that force into a giant illusion - creating the myth of a giant Green Jedi Knight.
Lieutenant Corran Horn was instrumental in the liberation of Coruscant and the capture of the last Super-Star Destroyer, Lusankya - the sister ship of the Executor. During this mission, Corran discovered his Jedi legacy when he found himself in the remains of the Jedi Temple on Coruscant - where he found his Grandfather's lightsaber.
Corran Horn would become an invaluable member of Luke Skywalker's New Jedi Order where he would rise to the rank of Jedi Master.
Lieutenant Corran Horn |
FIRST: The character. Corran Horn bears the stereotypical cocky smugness, disregard for authority and indifference to offs. Except he's a police officer.
So he's not beyond doing anything illegal to get his man - within limits of course.
His astromech droid, Whistler comes with a dry sense of humor; enhanced sensors for spying; security programming for slicing, and; the ability to analyze forensic data. Because Corran, like Luke, kept disregarding regular memory wipes, Whistler was one of those droids that started growing their own quirky personalities. In essence though he was a pretty good Detective's sidekick.
Get this, eventually Corran would marry a smuggler who, was also the daughter of a pirate (Reformed).
SECOND: Hasbro managed to copy just how cocky and smug Corran is in his facial sculpt:
His articulation is so good, he can dual wield his pistol.
FOURTH: To our knowledge Corran Horn is the only other Rogue Squadron member wearing the pilot's uniform to bear a lightsaber - that, as you can see from the above pics, can be clipped to his belt. Jacen and Jaina "Sticks" Solo don't count as they don't bear the pilots uniforms.
Here's Corran using both his pistol and his lightsaber:
Here he is with just his lightsaber. Corran Horn can dual wield his blade:

Jedi Master Corran Horn |
Whistler comes with a little gimmick: twist his head and a sensor-scope pops up. He can't retract his middle wheel, but does roll nicely on his dowels.
Horn has to fight when backed to a wall because... no telekinesis, no Force Jump |
FIRST: Corran Horn can't close his legs - no pun intended. Nor can he kneel. He simply lacks the articulation for that. He still fits in an X-Wing cockpit - plastic is soft enough to do that.
SECOND: His peg holes are shallow - preventing us from mounting him properly to a stand
THIRD: Whistler's third leg. We really wish it could fold up into his body. Placed in an X-Wing - Whistler runs a bit high because the wheel.
Corran Horn and Whistler are sold as a set in the "Star Wars Legacy Collection Exclusive Build A Dark Trooper Droid Action Figure 2-Pack Corran Horn and R2 Whistler (#5 of 5)" which is available on Amazon for US$ 70 (Roughly PhP 3,500 - wow - plus shipping).
I, Jedi indeed.
