Snake Eyes - Dollar General Exclusive

Presenting Snake Eyes from the Dollar General Exclusive toy-line.

I don't actually remember in what specific issue of the Marvel series GI Joe Comic that Snake Eyes switched to this power-ranger version of his uniform (I was poor and couldn't afford to keep buying comic books). But it was a short lived version.

It's not that I don't think it's a nice or practical uniform, it's just that I think commandos should stick to matte black uniforms with absolutely nothing gleaming off of them - they're supposed to be invisible after all. So this baby blue and light-gray variant kinda goes against everything that Snake Eyes should be - in my opinion at least.

My ideal Snake Eyes is still - and probably always will be - the Spetsnaz looking POC Wave 1 Snake Eyes, and; (with less gear) the POC Wave 3 Snake Eyes.

The blister card for the Dollar General Store Exclusive Snake Eyes doesn't say much and just talks about the GI Joe Team in general. A lot of people were actually surprised to find authentic GI Joe figures in a thrift store. Then he and the six other figures in his series had the gall to become rare (At least here in the Philippines)

I was happy to get him loose in the black market, then I found out just what he is: The Dollar General Store Exclusive Snake Eyes is made out of spare parts. Namely:

  • A redecoed mask from the POC Wave 3 Snake Eyes
  • The torso, body and legs of another POC Snake Eyes - the one with shades/goggles, night-vision lenses and blades that stuck to his chest
  • The whirl-wind kick Storm Shadow's arms
  • The Night-Fox's (Driver of the "Night" Awe Striker) battle harness
Hmmmm. Not sure where the sword is from. Addendum: Glenn P. Winkler of the G.I. Joe Facebook Community pointed out that this is not the sword that comes with the Dollar General Store Exclusive Snake Eyes. It should be a purely black one with a blue hilt. The actual sword can be viewed here

What's to like about the Dollar General store exclusive Snake Eyes?

Well he does bring me all the way back to the 90s - good times, good women.

In all seriousness, for a figure that feels like it was assembled out of spare or rotting parts in the basement, it's actually not bad as a figure and it does come across as decently articulated, and nicely made.

As you can see, the figure can kneel, is quite decently detailed and if you remove his vest, can perform actions that put him almost on par with most GI Joe Pursuit of Cobra figures - even if he does not have the new wrist joints that the line has become quite known.

It was also really nice that the figure came with an "unbranded" stand (no name) that you can use for other figures in the future.

What's NOT to like about the Dollar General store exclusive Snake Eyes?

Because he's made out of spare parts, you'll find that his arms tend to be a bit stubby - apparently Snake Eyes has a longer reach than Storm Shadow. What you see here is one of the rare moments when you'll be able to get his arms to cross and hold his blade with both hands.

Speaking of which, have you noticed that Snake Eyes has no other weapon? Not only that, the Dollar General Store Snake Eyes does not have a scabbard for his sword - though you can stick it in between the folds of his battle harness on his back - and wait for him to cry out in pain.

It would have been nice if he had a secondary weapon, and for display purposes, I'll probably be giving him an UZI.

Other than that? He's not bad for a kit-bashed figure. This particular Dollar General Execlusive Snake Eyes was purchased on the black market via Kramer's Toy Warden for PhP 300 (Roughly US$ 7.32). He's available on Amazon for US$ 6.18 (Roughly PhP 253.38 plus shipping).

  1. He is quite a surprise, I was wondering if/when they'd get round to homaging this Snake-Eyes. I was so happy when they did the '89 remake whom this figure uses the body and legs from.

Plus it's nice to have a Snake-Eyes with some colour.

  2. True that. I just wish that he wasn't made from spare parts :)
