DC Collectibles Felicity Smoak Action Figure

DC Collectibles Felicity Smoak Action Figure
Presenting a Felicity Smoak Action Figure from DC Collectibles.

To the uninitiated, this is not the step-mother of half-of Firestorm, this is the one from the Arrow TV series. So this is the future Mrs Oliver Queen, former couldhavebeen Mrs Atom, daughter of the evil genius Calculator (So all this time was she a metahuman?), AKA Overwatch (Because the wheelchair bound computer genius name Oracle was already taken).

Seriously the writers of Arrow should stop ripping off Batman (Or maybe DC should have just dropped Gotham and Stephen Amell should just be playing Bruce Wayne).

Anyway, this is the action figure released by DC Collectibles based upon the likeness of the character played by the very beautiful Canadian Emily Bett Rickards.

Who, personally, should have just kept on dating the Atom (Or Barry Allen. What is is about women and bad boys?)

The DC Collectibles Felicity Smoak Action Figure's blister card does not say anything about the character. It just promotes the show, Arsenal, and John Diggle, and comes with a very nice picture of the beautiful Felicity Smoak on the side.

The package reveals that Felicity comes with a alternate pair of hands. One pair has her with her palms slightly open, the other pair are in closed fists. There are no other accessories. No stand. And no, those eye-glasses don't come off - though they do move.

Also the glasses are tinted amber. We do not ever recall ever seeing Felicity on the show with tinted glasses, but we could be wrong.

What's NOT to like about the DC Collectibles Felicity Smoak Action Figure?

FIRST:  This is a doll, not an action figure.

A few days ago we had a nice discussion on Marvel / Star Wars / Disney's decision not to make as many female characters as male characters. Their argument is that boys do not like to play with "dolls" and figures of Rey, Black Widow, Maria Hill, the Scarlet Witch etc.... were not desired by boys.

We disagree with this policy given that a) If they're on the team, then they have to be on the team or the team isn't complete; b) We like to believe that society is mature enough to look past a hero's gender, race, sexual orientation and traditional roles - the success of the new Ms Marvel comic book would seem to support this; c) We appreciate the beautiful, sexy characters thrown at us by the media and we would like them standing on our shelves. Rey from Star Wars would be an interesting thesis subject matter, but that's a different discussion for another day.

But this particular DC Collectibles Felicity Smoak Action Figure doesn't fit any of the above categories.

a) If they're on the team, then they have to be on the team or the team isn't complete: Felicity Smoak is the technical and emotional support behind the Arrow and his band of merry men - occasionally she's also the technical and emotional support for the Flash. If you were to pose this figure with the other Arrow figures, she would stand out like a vulnerable sore thumb. It would have been better if they confined her to a wheelchair and gave her a laptop like DC Direct did for their 2003 Oracle action figure (Birds of Prey). She has no function whatsoever.

b) We like to believe that society is mature enough to look past a hero's gender, race, sexual orientation and traditional roles: Except Felicity Smoak is a character with a traditionally female role (First as an IT geek, then executive assistant, then fiance). Even as CEO of Palmer tech she still is seen being pushed around by her board. And frankly? She's dressed here as a secretary, not as an empowered woman. Unless maybe we give her a whip or a ruler to hold. And the DC Collectibles Felicity Smoak stands and poses as someone vulnerable thanks to her limited articulation.

c) We appreciate the beautiful, sexy characters thrown at us by the media and we would like them standing on our shelves: The DC Collectibles Felicity Smoak action figure doesn't look anything like her. The tinted glasses take her even further away from looking like Emily Bett Rickards. And she's certainly not sexy - well maybe to some, but not to us - they did capture her awkwardness, but not her appeal.

So, yeah. Honestly? To us, this is a doll, not an action figure.

What's to like about the DC Collectibles Felicity Smoak Action Figure?

FIRST:  DC Collectibles actually got her proportions correct. We initially wanted to criticize her for having such huge shoulder pads, but then apparently the very modelesque Emily Bett Rickards does have broad shoulders, a v-shaped figure and long limbs:

SECOND:  The DC Collectibles Felicity Smoak Action Figure is a great tool to piss off Arrow lovers (Peace!) :

This is a possibility though:

The Felicity Smoak action figure is available on Amazon for US$ 20 (Roughly PhP 960 plus shipping). Hopefully a nicer version of her is around the corner.
