Welcome to our review of the Star Wars Black Series Sabine Wren Action Figure.

Now if you follow the Star Wars Rebels cartoon, you know that this look is actually dated. Sabine Wren customizes her armor... and hair... as she goes. Each new mark signifies a major battle or campaign. In essence she's keeping score on her armor - just like Clone Captain Rex did - but in a less morbid manner  (Rex kept a tally of the dead on his armor).

The current incarnation of the Lothal Rebel's ace saboteur and demolitions expert currently sports a silver to violet mane of hair (She had blue to green hair in Season 2), and a much more colorful set of armor. This is her Star Wars Rebels Season 1 incarnation.

Also she now wields the infamous Darksaber - the sword wielded by the late commander of the Mandalorian Death Watch, Pre Vizsla - who wielded the Dark Saber till Darth Maul decided to decapitate him. Darth Maul would wield the Darksaber till he decided to leave it in the Nightsister's lair on Dathomir where it would work it's way back into a Mandalorian's hand.

We guess it's safe to say that we can expect many custom incarnations of this particular action figure in the immediate future. Her blister pack reads: "Sabine Wren was a Mandalorian warrior, explosives expert, and talented graffiti artist – qualities that came in handy as one of the first to rebel against the Empire."

WHAT'S TO LIKE ABOUT THE STAR WARS BLACK SERIES SABINE WREN ACTION FIGURE?


FIRST: The detailing. Sabine Wren comes with everything you see to your left: A pair of pistols, a spray-paint gun and her "Nite Owls" helmet. Her hair, helmet and armor are very well detailed. We're particularly fond of the paint-specks that adorn her boots and gloves. The reality about art is that art is born of a great mess, and her boots and gloves definitely reflect this. Walk into any art studio and you will see the same speckled chaos somewhere within.

Other items of note include:

• A Dejarik board on her right shoulder
• What appears to be a pair of Jaig eyes on top of her "Nite-Owls" helmet. Sabine has yet to reveal the source of her helmet - and if indeed these are Jaig eyes, as they receive a makeover in Season 2. We don't think one would mess with a mark of honor. 
• The Rebel Alliance Starbird on her left breastplate. Rebels has a knack of rewriting Star Wars History and it looks like Galen Marek might be written out of the official canon, so eventually Sabine might be credited with creating the Rebel Alliance Pheonix.
• An  Anooba hunter on her left shoulder - the Bounty Hunter Embo had a pet Anooba named Marrok.

SECOND: The high level of articulation. The Star Wars Black Series 6" Sabine Wren Action Figure comes with excellent articulation and even features the wrist articulation of the modern GI-Joe action figures - allowing her right hand to move left-to-right parallel to her wrist, and her left hand to move up-and-down perpendicular to her wrist:

THIRD: Three minor details:

• The range finder on her helmet can be brought down, and;
• Instead of strapping her holsters to her legs - and reducing their articulation - Disney decided to peg them instead. This results in a pair of holsters that always stay at her thighs. If the demanded articulation gets too extreme, the holsters can simply be removed from their pegs-holes. 
• The spray-paint gun is unnecessary but is appreciated because it's an essential extension of the character as an artist.

WHAT'S NOT TO LIKE ABOUT THE STAR WARS BLACK SERIES SABINE WREN ACTION FIGURE?

FIRST: Sabine's legs are awkwardly thin. Hiding how thin they were in the pictorial was a bit of a challenge. This was unexpected and its almost like we're in possession of a Star Wars cartoon character, and not a real world incarnation of the character - as was in the case of Failed Jedi Ahsoka Tano. To further back this idea is the fact that, SECOND:  Her helmet is HUGE!!!!. It's a literal bucket that you shove onto her compressed head - which is another sad point. Her hair may be short, but Sabine's hair in the cartoons seems quite heathly and full. Here it's plastered to the sides of her face almost as if she just came from a steam bath or just really, really needs a bath.

An alternate head would have been appreciated to reduce the size of the helmet and allow for better hair - as was done in the case of her fellow Mandalorian Bounty Hunter Shae Vizla.
